Yesterday evening I was having dinner with some friends at a restaurant in Rotterdam, when all of a sudden an old song of ABBA came out of the speakers. A nice feel-good and upbeat song, which made us move our hips under the table. We all started to laugh when one of us said “we are giving away our age, because the young people of today don’t even know what ABBA is”. This is actually true, huh? But what about our own childhood? Mine was in fact careless and it felt very natural. Yet I realize that it was quite an easy childhood. Although I believe that every child should have a carefree childhood, we all know that it is not reality. And that’s why I joined the foundation Wings of Support years ago, in which I now am an employee. A foundation of volunteers and donors, dedicated to underprivileged children in the third world. Last year, Villa Ticca was suggested to us, to become one of our projects. This is how we got to know Mariska Versteeg’s effort in Ecuador, together with a fantastic team! During my first visit to Villa Ticca in Quito, I had a tour at the childcare and I was introduced to many of the children. Playful, naughty, and especially eager to learn. And what struck me then? A piece of carelessness that I saw reflected in the magic of their childhood laughter! And that’s what makes it all worthwhile!
